The riches inside it make this church in Cáceres a must on any tour of the city.
Although it is located outside the city walls, in the Caleros district, this church has become one of the finest tourist attractions in Cáceres due to the artworks inside it.
One of the most remarkable features is a spectacular main altarpiece, commissioned in 1557 to be built by master Alonso Berruguete, one of the most outstanding Spanish Mannerist sculptors. Berruguete was unable to finish the altarpiece himself and it was completed by his disciples in his workshop in 1570.
Other artworks you will see inside the church are the images of Nuestra Señora de la Esclarecida and the Cristo de los Milagros or Cristo de las Indulgencias, both from the 15th century, and the Jesus of Nazarath carved in Seville in 1609 by Tomás de la Huerta.
On the outside the Gothic doorways with archivolts framed by alfiz will catch your attention.
