A legend written in Gothic letters on the walls of the old shrine of San Bartolomé says that the construction work was completed in 1508.
Legend has it that the church of San Bartolomé, in Jerez de los Caballeros, dates from the time before the Reconquest and that it was built in honour of the city's patron saint, when the monarchs of León used to visit this land that was occupied by the Moors.
The current church was built in the 15th century and renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries, but you can still see important Gothic remains of the original 13th century shrine.
At the main altar you can find a simple but adorned altarpiece by José de la Barrera, which was placed there in 1691.
An interesting feature outside is its Baroque tower, built for the second time in 1759 after the first one was destroyed by an earthquake that happened in Lisbon. It is made of brick, and fired clay and plasterwork has also been used. It is decorated with glazed tiles.
On the façade you can see tiles decorated with ceramic discs forming friezes with Baroque motifs. -
